PICTURE 1

This picture shows a girl’s football team celebrating their victory in a football match. They are in a football stadium. I think they are Indian, English, Chinese and African. There are about ten people in the group and all of them are wearing the football uniform except one, who’s wearing a yellow t-shirt. I think they are all between the same ages, between fifteen and seventeen. Their uniforms are red and white. It seems they are all happy and they’re smiling and shouting. I like this picture because is not a sad photo, it’s really beautiful because they are all laughing and celebrating something good, their victory.

This picture shows a group of friends playing football in a park. They are all boys and there’s just one girl. They are all Indian people. At the background I can see flats and a wall. There are about seven people and all the boys except two are shirtless. The girl is wearing the uniform of her football team. The girl has the ball and the others are watching her and laughing. I think they are all between the same ages, between fifteen and seventeen, maybe eighteen too. It seems they are really concentrated. I love this picture because it’s gorgeous to see how the girl manages the ball and the boys can’t keep out of her.

Juliette(Jules) also wants to be a professional footballer. She plays for women's football team, the Hunslow Harriers.

Jess' parents, Mr and Mrs Bhamra, immigrated to Britain before their children were born. They want their daughters to be proper Indian girls. 

Jules' father Alan supports his daughter's football career. He practices with her and goes to watch her matches. Her mother, Paula, doesn't like it. She wants her daughter to be more feminine.

pinky is Jess' older sister. She is busy planning her wedding to her boyfriend, Teetu.

Joe is the coach of the Hounslow Harriers. He used to play football but a knee injury forced him to stop playing.

 JESS:

Jess wanted to be like Beckham but her parents didn’t let her play. She finally got her dream. She played to the final and an American scout saw her playing They gave her a scholarship to play on an American Team with Juls, her best friend. Her parents finally accepted it.

JULS:

Juls also wanted to be a professional footballer, and her parents agreed that. They allowed her to do what she liked, but her mother didn't really want it. She played at the final like Jess. The American scout saw her and they gave a scholarship to her too. she went to play to USA with Jess.

Exercice C: Think about the expectations that Jess' and Jules' families have of them. Make lists of the things that their families and society expects girls to do. Make one list for both girls, and another list for Jess.

Exercice A: This section starts with Pinky's wedding being cancelled, because her future in - laws think that Jess was kissing a white man at the bus-stop. Her parents then forbid her from playing football. Put the following events in order.

Jess is an Indian Girl who always wanted to be a professional footballer like her hero, David Beckham. She is a dark-haired and brown-eyed girl. She’s tolerant and friendly because when she entered to the girls’ team, she immediately went well with the other girls. We also know that she is very sensitive because when she had the problem with her best friend, Jules, she wanted to get a solution. She’s not serious and shy, she’s cheerful and curious. Her hobby is to play football although her family forbids her to do it. She is in love with Joe, her coach. She’s quite short and slim. She has a sister called Pinky.

JULES:

Jules is a British girl, she has no brothers or sisters and she has the same age as Jess. She is playing in a girl’s football team and her passion is to play football. She is in love with Joe like Jess, but Joe isn’t in love with Jules. She is taller than Jess but she’s slim as her. She is a blond-haired and brown-eyed girl. She also wants to become a professional footballer. She is very friendly and generous because she was who tried to introduce Jess at her team with the other girls. She is always active because she always tries to play football with his father. She is a little intolerant and mean because at the beginning, she doesn’t accept that Joe isn’t in love with her, but finally she accepts it. 

JOE:

Joe is a coach of a girl’s football team. He is British. He coaches Jess and Joe; both are in Joe’s football team. He is shorter than Jules and taller than Jess. He can’t play football because of a knee injury. He is generous, friendly and sensitive. He is not really confident with himself. He is usually tolerant, but sometimes he could be intolerant with the girls while they’re training. He’s not very serious, she’s usually cheerful. He is a brown-haired and blue-eyed man. He is in love with Jess.
